Purchasing a New Suit

No matter where you look, the internet, magazines, newspapers or even when window shopping at the local Mall, you will find advertising for menswear. Men can be as fussy, if not more demanding, than women when it comes to making sure they look good. When shopping for a new suit, the moment you walk into a men’s store, you will be attacked by the sales staff, and no matter what you put on, you are told you look good in it. If you need advice, do not rely upon the staff. Pick what you want and what you feel comfortable in. Not what a fashion critic tells you.

One of your first decisions will be about color. Not every color works for every occasion. Think whether you want a dark suit or a light colored one. Where you’ll wear it can give you some information. If you need a suit for work, for instance, a pinstripe would be nice but perhaps not for more festive or less formal occasions.

The style you select is important and should be factored into your decision. Trends change every few years. At one time, double breasted suits as well as the use of a vest, where the in demand style. As fashion trends changed, the single breasted suit became dominate. Now the trend has shifted back to double breasted suits. So hopefully, when the trend changes again, you did not toss your old suit. .

If you can afford it, think about having a suit made-to-measure. It will skim your body in a way that no off-the-rack suit can. It may be more expensive at first, but you’ll feel confident every time you put it on. And isn’t that the point of a good suit?

The type of fabric is extremely important when selecting a suit. Despite the higher price, wool should be your first choice. First, it is acceptable in terms of fashion, and second, it is easier to maintain and superior to other treated fabrics.

If you’re looking for a suit to wear in warmer climates or in an office environment where the temperature will be high, think about a wool blend. That will be much lighter than a heavy wool. Or you can consider the clean, cool look of linen.

An often over looked factor, is making sure you select the right shirt and tie to go with your suit. When you remove your jacket at work or at lunch, your shirt and tie should complement you and your suit, in both style and quality.

Finally, the best advice in the world will be no match for a critical partner or spouse. When purchasing a new suit, if an honest opinion can be given by your wife, or even someone else’s wife, listen to it. After all, although it’s important to feel comfortable, it’s just as important to look good. It’s no good trying to convince yourself.
