In one form or another, fashion has been with us as long as there have been people. The history of fashion therefore actually began with early humans, who utilized things like animal skins and shells to adorn their bodies with them. During special occasions there were special garments that were worn, which is not that much unlike how humans dress today.

In regions such as Ancient Greece, the history of fashion really introduced the utilization of naturalism. Fashion history as we understand it actually began to come into being during the Renaissance. At that period in history renaissance was a time of cultural and intellectual enlightenment, so it makes complete sense that the idea of fashion should evolve along with the period women and men alike took great pride in wearing decorative powdered wigs, a trend that would last into the early part of the 19th century.

A Walk Through The Centuries

As the 17th century came into being, so did the trends of fashion that both men and women continued to share in. For instance, buckled shoes, both decorative and plain, dependent upon economic privilege of the individual wearing them, started to become very popular.

Also, women and men began to adorn themselves with capes as a means of shielding themselves against the cold weather. Additionally, women and men both started wearing the hats that are nowadays commonly thought of as “Pilgrim Hats”. The primary difference being that women had a tendency to choose to wear feathers in their hats more often than men did.

Moving forward into the 18th century, it was a period of men wearing an outfit that in most instances was comprised of buckled shoes, stockings, waistcoat, a shirt, and outer coat. They all started wearing three cornered hats. The women had a greater tendency to wear basic dresses, and their hair was often partly hidden by a white cap.

As the 19th, 20th, and 21st century have demonstrated, fashion has a tendency of becoming history all the time, because as history has taught us trends are always evolving. Fashion history is most certainly vast topic that spans every culture and the entire world. So the next time you go to the mall for some other store for close shopping, take a moment to think about fashion history and how far fashion has come.

Dark skinned? You can take full advantage of the seasons brights as they will put you in the spotlight! Avoid black and dark blues though as you may fade into the background!

Universal points: Underwear!! Can’t say it loudly enough – it’s as important as the dress! Make sure you get a well fitted bra, even if it’s a strapless dress you need definition and uplift. Think knickers too! Nothing worse than panty line under and Sleek and Slinky! Also try out foundation undies in good high street stores – they’ll cinch, hold and smooth like nothing else!

Do think about accessories and whether they match or ‘partner’ the main colour of your dress. Try out different length earrings that suit the dress and your chosen hair style. There are some amazing head bands around at the moment that are real statement pieces and could just ‘make’ your dress. Long evening gloves in bright colours are making a come back too which look great with big rings worn over the top

As a shoe designer to the Hollywood stars, Salvatore decided to do something different. Incorporating both design and anatomy he created the wedge shoe. Not only did he create a completely new style of shoe, but he developed a completely new heel type: the cork heel. One of the reasons the he chose cork was because of the shortage and rationing of fabrics and materials (leather and cotton) because of the war in Europe. It’s this unique and beautiful approach to creating footwear that set not only Salvatore apart, but his creation; the wedge shoe. This is why I said the wedge shoe is the most comfortable, because it was made to be exactly that. But comfort isn’t all the wedge has to offer.

Contrary to some beliefs that the wedge shoe is made for casual wear, Ferragamo, as a designer to the stars, made a red carpet style of shoe. His designs were specially made for years for women like Eva Peron and Marilyn Monroe. What Salvatore started, other designers improved upon.

The wedge shoe has grown from a red carpet, funky shoe to a series of styles. There are platform wedges, where the toe of the shoe is raised up slightly or up to equal to the heel. A casual shoe, called the espadrille, made with canvas upper and woven heels is another style of wedge. Designers from all over the world have at least one design each season as a wedge. In the 2008 there were cool styles from designers like Marc Jacobs and Phillip Lim which hit the runways. While the styles on the runway are usually over the top, they are based on the what hits the ready to wear styles. One example is the “geisha” styles that were featured on the runway.
